Detail of 'Brocken', a series of 8 new hinged black walnut and brass works. These were all made from a single plank by a Belgian master carpenter. Numbers 1-5 are made from the darker heartwood, while numbers 6-8 come from the outer wood and are paler, revealing very beautiful jet black patterning. Tiny steel-composite structures, on which the works are hung, were designed to allow the shelf-like woodworks to be hung straight, both horizontally and vertically. The works consist of various sections of walnut joined with hand-fitted brass hinges. The dimensions correspond to my father's armspan and joints. The movement between the 8 pieces is 'choreographed' for a slightly stiff, recently retired, 62 year old man. From the mid point in the series, a process of erasure ensues.

For more information about these works see the Press Release and the artist's book, Thomas Bernard Malamud (2009)
